The DC Studios logo was placed in a rainy alley in Gotham
Narrative
Following the events of The Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin, attempts to take over Gotham’s criminal underworld. From melting off his makeup to filming in freezing temperatures, Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti discuss how they came to terms with their roles during the production of The Penguin. Colin Farrell fought hard to get his version of the Penguin to smoke tobacco in The Batman (2022), but was unsuccessful. However, in his own series, the character is portrayed as a casual tobacco user, preferring cigars.
Absolutely nailed the tone and atmosphere
The umbrella falls and the logo changes to the Warner Bros. logo. Appeared on The Graham Norton Show: Lady Gaga/Demi Moore/Colin Farrell/Richard Ayoade/Jack Savoretti (2024). Grimy, grim and dark, but Farrell is able to capture that spark of charm that made Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano so much.
Where to start with Farrell
There are similarities to The Sopranos, especially in tone. There’s a lot of dark stuff going on in this opening episode, but there are still comedic moments that fit the tone and don’t undermine it. Astonishing is the right word. I love seeing talented star actors give it their all in roles like this, and the makeup/CGI or whatever exactly they did to physically transform him into a penguin not only passes the eye test, but looks incredibly realistic.
And Farrell as an actor is completely immersed in this role
There’s always the risk that if the characterization isn’t good enough or is a little underwhelmed, it can be completely distracting. In the case of the penguin, it enhances his performance and the overall quality of the show because it’s such good work. I might be a little biased as he was one of my favorite actors before this show, but I think this one will bring him some well-deserved praise. I never really start new shows right away because I like to watch all the episodes at once, but I wanted to see how this one turned out.
Congratulations to everyone involved in this project
I wasn’t disappointed, in fact it blew me away. Check out our recap of “Yellowstone” Season 5, Part 2, “Squid Game” Season 2, and more of the most anticipated new and returning series coming to TV and streaming.
